Faculty Resources

The CAL offers a host of resources and services for faculty in the sciences. Listed below are a few of the services that the CAL offers. If there is anything that you need or that is not available that you think should be, give me a call or drop by. I am always open to new ideas and ways to support the faculty.

Fileshares

Fileshares are automatically created for every academic program using the CAL based on the set configuration (see program fileshares below for more details). These fileshares can also be requested for science programs who are not scheduled to work in the CAL but would like network space for their students. We only ask that you schedule a half hour block at the beginning of the quarter so we can introduce your students to the CAL and how to access CAL resources.
Program fileshares: The beginning of each quarter fileshares for all programs scheduled to be in the CAL will be created. On request we will setup fileshares for programs notusing the CAL, but ask that we be given a half hour at the beginning of the quarter to present to your class how to navigate through this technology to your students. A quick diagram explains the default program share framework. If you have questions about this or want to order up something special, let us know.
Personal fileshares: Faculty can request personal fileshare space on our data server that is available both on campus and off campus.
Research fileshares: Research fileshares are available for both short and long term research projects and like other fileshares on Masu, are available both on and off campus and are backed up nightly.

Remote Backups

The CAL offers remote backup services to faculty offices and labs. These backups are done Monday – Wednesday starting at 2:00 PM and at 10:00am on Fridays. We can backup Mac, Windows and Redhat Linux machines using Retrospect software.

Scheduling

For scheduling your program in the CAL, please refer to the Cal Schedules page, then let us know when you’d like to schedule your CAL time.

If you are using Outlook, you can add Scientific Computing to your list of calendars here to view current and future space reservations, or you can link to the schedules for the East and West CAL remotely.
If you are using Entourage, follow the instructions here. Both require log in.

Equipment

The CAL has a wide array of equipment available for faculty checkout, including:

8 Windows laptops
2 new MacBooks
1 IBook
2 projectors
12 mobile computers set up to use Ocean Optics Spectrometers
5 HP Diode Arrays
2 Trimble GeoXT handheld GPS units

To reserve equipment, contact the CAL manager. Faculty may also check out equipment for 1 day or less on a drop-in basis, depending on availability.

Workshops

Technical workshops are available on request. Frequent requests include Adobe Illustrator and ArcGIS.

Printing and Plotting

The CAL houses two HP Laserjet 8100 Black & White printers (which get a lot of use and will hopefully be replaced next year), one HP Color Laserjet 4500-DN printer, and an Epson Pro 9800 professional plotter.
